The Rise of Agentic AI: What Tool Calling Means for Chatbots

Beyond Simple Q&A

For years, chatbots have been limited to answering questions from a fixed script or, more recently, generating text with large language models. But a fundamental shift is underway: AI agents that can take actions, not just talk.

This paradigm - known as agentic AI - gives chatbots the ability to call external tools, query databases, check availability, look up orders, and perform real tasks on behalf of users. It's the difference between a chatbot that says "I think we have that in stock" and one that looks up your stock and confirms it.

How Tool Calling Works

Modern LLMs like Google's Gemini and OpenAI's GPT-4o support function calling natively. When the model determines that a user's question requires real-time data, it returns a structured tool call instead of (or alongside) a text response. The application executes the tool, feeds the result back to the model, and the model produces a natural-language answer grounded in real data.

The MCP Approach

At Morv, we've built our tool system on the Model Context Protocol (MCP) - a pluggable architecture where each integration registers its own tools. When a visitor asks about a product, the Shopify tool looks it up in your store's catalogue, which Morv keeps in sync. When they ask whether a holiday let is free on certain dates, the Guesty tool checks its availability. The model decides which tool to use and turns the result into a plain answer. Our integrations page lists the systems you can connect today.

Why This Matters for Business

Agentic chatbots can reduce support load, help more visitors find what they need, and deliver experiences that feel genuinely helpful rather than frustrating. As the technology matures, the gap between businesses using agentic AI and those stuck on basic chatbots will only widen.

The future of customer interaction isn't just conversational - it's transactional.
